There is a Speaker or Demonstrator holding the attention of the 45 to 60 members per meeting. Membership is around 85, subscription is R100 per anum and members pay R10 per meeting, Visitors R25. An “In House” competition is held monthly for members and periodically there are workshops, newsletters are sent out monthly. A very active, friendly and helpful club with a wonderful group of artists, newcomers to art, amateurs and professionals.
Meta Orton (23 October 1912 - 12 .January 2001) was the driving force behind the formation of the North Coast Art Group. When after 10 years of living in London and traveling around the world, she returned to South Africa and settled in Umhlanga Rocks. Meta's studio became the meeting and working place for local artists, who painted under her tuition. In 1975 Meta sold her home: While Meta was in South West Africa that year, Lib Steward, concerned that the Group might disintegrate, organized a meeting in her home and suggested they form it into a properly constituted Group complete with President, Secretary and Committee.
Meta Orton was a world traveler, accomplished artist and prolific writer of letters, corresponded for 25 years with her wide and ever increasing circle of friends. She eventually published those letters in her book: THE WORLD AND UMHLANGA ROCKS. a limited edition of 600 copies. (1983)
Join the members of NCAG when Ina Millman a well known and respected Johannesburg artist and teacher will be giving a demonstration to NCAG on the 11th July at La Lucia Library, followed by a Workshop catering for the limited number of 15 artists each day on the 13th and 14th July from 9 to 4 at the Catholic Church opposite circle of Kensington Drive. Durban North. Correct address will be given on booking. Cost for each day is R300 per artist payable in advance and by the 13th June. As we have financial commitments, the amount is non refundable unless a replacement is found. The medium will be Oils or Acrylics, easels and own materials are required. Tea and snack lunch will be supplied on each day. All details will be forwarded once we have names of those who wish to participate, and have received final details from Ina, open to all artists. Book early we are filling up fast.
