Associates are an elite group of artists. Ordinary members can gain Associate status as the standard of their art reaches new highs. Open Exhibitions of selected works by members are organised twice a year. Each member may submit up to three paintings, in either one of two classifications - a) Purist / traditional watercolour techniques, or b) Mixed waterbased media within the definition of the WSSA Constitution. All paintings are anonymously presented before a panel of 5 experienced judges. Only watercolour paintings of the highest quality are accepted for Open Exhibitions. Each painting accepted for exhibition gains the member one point towards his/her Associateship of the WSSA. In order to gain Associateship, a member must gain 10 points over 8 consecutive Open Exhibitions.
Higher Associate: This category was introduced to encourage our existing Associates to continue to participate in Open Exhibitions and achieve even higher standards of excellence in their art. Again, to achieve status 10 points must be gained over 8 consecutive Open exhibitions. A broader scope is given to the media and technique which may be used, and a point is only gained if an even higher score is achieved than is required to achieve an Associateship point.
Fellows are elected by the Fellowship Committee, which consists of present Fellows and past Chairpersons of the Society. Fellows are restricted to 5% of the membership and prospective candidates are only nominated from the ranks of Associates, and must have fully participated in the affairs and activities of the WSSA.
Honorary Life Membership is conferred on those who have given meritorious service to the Society (not necessarily artists) and have dedicated themselves to its aims.
A further objective of the WSSA is to encourage the development of artists from previously disadvantaged backgrounds by giving them access to art tuition and providing opportunities for them to exhibit their art.
