Renowned professional artist Peter Rippon is hosting a four-day workshop over two weekends to introduce beginner painters to the medium of oil paint.

The workshop aims to eliminate much of the guesswork and uncertainty that can make oil painting seem difficult, and to open painting up as a highly enjoyable and rewarding activity.

Oil paint is a very powerful medium. Its complexities allow for endless possibilities. The workshop is taught using traditional methods, giving students the technical skills to explore these possibilities.

The workshop will start with the basics, training the eye with still-life drawings in charcoal and chalk. Painting is then approached using black and white paints. This helps students develop a feel for the paints and brushes, before approaching the task of colour mixing.

Next, colour mixing is introduced by adding a few earth colours to the palette. A full range of muted colours can be mixed from this simple palette. Finally the brighter primary colours are introduced to extend the range of the palette.

The workshop will start on the weekend of 6-7 October, and continues the following weekend of 13‑14 October. It will be held at artSPACE, in the studio space above the gallery. The cost for the four-day workshop is R1700, which includes all materials. Space is limited so booking is essential.
