Why not use a camera to photograph your own backgrounds. Then use a "phot shop" type software to enhance or modify the photo to the desired size and brightness.
By printing the photo onto transparency film, you can then transfer the image onto your final substrate. This will give you an instant background onto which you can begin your creation.
